Welcome
Helensburgh has two designated Conservation Areas:- The Hill House and Upper Helensburgh. They contain superb examples of Victorian and
Edwardian domestic architecture designed by foremost Scottish architects like A. N. Paterson, William Leiper, William Spence and Robert Wemyss along with
Charles Rennie Mackintosh's renowned building, The Hill House.
These exuberant buildings contrast beautifully with the 18th century grid street plan in which they are set. Generous grass verges are planted with many varieties
of trees. The properties either side are bounded by lovely old stone walls or good mixed hedges and the whole adds up to an outstandingly beautiful and
tranquil suburban environment.
With help and funding from Argyll & Bute Council and support from the Helensburgh Community Council and many other Helensburgh Groups and Schools, the Helensburgh Conservation Areas Group (HCAG) produced a Draft Appraisal of the Conservation Areas in December 2006. Using the many and detailed responses to the Draft Document, HCAG members are currently working on the final Appraisal Document. A Review and a Management Plan for the Conservation Areas are to follow.
